The Magic Behind Steam Trains... by Mickeefan

Walt had a passion for steam trains, and at Disney World they are showcased in a delightful tour every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday at 7:30AM.  Thanks to Mickeefan who took us with him on his "steam train" adventure ...

We arrived at the Magic Kingdom entrance at 7:45AM. The tour usually starts at 7:15AM, but with the late openings  our start time was delayed.  Our C.M. guide greeted and checked everyone in. We were a small group of 17. As we waited for everyone to show up, our guide discussed how long he had been with Disney and how much he enjoyed his job. He had tremendous knowledge of the Disney Train system.

The Roger Broggie was up in front of the train station and they waved to us as they took a run around the park. This was a normal daily test run, which is done to check everything out before they let anyone on the train. They have  many safety checks they go through every morning to make sure the trains are working properly. We went through security and up to the train station where we boarded and went over to Toontown.

At this point they threw the switches and we  backed into the Round house where all the other trains are kept. This is an area where  only people taking the tour ever get to see. We backed into one of the roundhouse buildings, but due to OSHA and insurance regulations we could not get off the train until he pulled back out. All this time he was telling us where and how Walt acquired the trains. They were in bad shape and were completely taken apart and restored. There was actually a 5th train that was a part of a playground but it turned out to be too far deteriorated to restore.

We were able to climb on to the Lilly Belle and look around. They explained all the workings of the cab gages and controls. Our guide fired up the boiler to show us how it is done and how when properly lit will show no smoke. At this point, we boarded and went back to the train station where we learned more history behind Walt and his trains.

At the end of the tour everyone was presented with a neat very heavy Railroad Spike as a souvenir of our tour. We really enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to anyone interested in trains and the history behind Walt and his trains.

Cost for this tour is $30 and everyone must be 10 years old or older .
